Designating Base Items On A Pallet

By Patrick Bracken | October 12, 2017

After building containers in the batching process, the load planner reviews the contents of the container to potentially designate an item as the base of the container, to be selected first even if not the first pick sequence in the container.  The selection of this base is subject to several constraints that are in the Product Type table.  The list of constraints and their definitions can be found below.

Minimum Base Percent Hi-Ti Pallet

The number of cases in the base item must be at least this percentage of the number of cases of a standard full pallet (HI x TI) for the base item.

Minimum Base Percent Net Capacity

Depending on whether cube or weight is being used as the capacity constraint, the cube (or weight) of the base item must be at least this percentage of the total net cube (or weight) capacity of the container (pallet) to which it is assigned. If using both cube and weight, then either one exceeding the threshold is sufficient for being considered a base item. When considering cube capacity, height limitations and lost space due to stacking cases may both come into play when determining the net capacity of the container (pallet).

Maximum Top to Base Density Ratio

The density of the most dense item in the container (pallet) must be no more than this number of times more dense than the density of the base item. In other words, the ratio formed by taking the highest density on the pallet and dividing it by the base item’s density can be no larger than the specified parameter ratio. The density of an item is determined by simply dividing the weight of one case by the cube of one case.

Maximum Base Aisle Skips

The pick sequence of the aisle of the base item may not be more than this much larger than the lowest aisle pick sequence of any item on the container (pallet).
